I am a food enthusiast, a writer and a creative cook. Growing up in a Sicilian family transplanted to a Massachusetts mill town, family meals were the nexus for reconnecting as a family at the end of the day with tales about spelling tests, piece-work at the factory nearby or news about Aunt Josephine’s latest dolore. Our large extended family always came together for the major holidays and cooking or talking about cooking occupied much of our time in advance of the holidays.
As much as I loved the holidays, it is the simple meals that we ate every day that interest me the most now. The scrambled egg and pepper sandwiches that I carried to school or the pasta with broccoli that we ate for dinner frequently were simple and delicious mainstays of our diet. As I began my own family I explored ways of balancing my culinary heritage that sometimes conflicted with American meatloaf and buffalo wings. At this site, I want to focus on the blending of the new world and the old with the emphasis on plant-based meals inspired by Sicilian culture and cuisine.
